A splendid question from my splendid friend, Arnie Gerstein: “Dr. Glen and to whomever this applies, how is it actually going in our life? Me thinks we tend to be such strong cheerleaders for others, and we can overlook our own hills and valleys. This is true for so many of us on this internet journey through mindfulness groups. What are we learning each day about self-transformation?”
Quite humbly and respectfully Arnie, life IS truly good and so full of splendid blessings each day, even each moment. That said (and again, humbly and respectfully), I believe it is SO important to realize that among the greatest of blessings of all in this life, is that there is ALWAYS room for improvement, greater and greater levels of objective insight and its practical applications. I believe this is best in the loving and altruistic spirit of True Appreciation of the miracle of the moment…more and more each moment.
We all have the capacity to get stuck on ongoing stagnant plateaus…and if we get stuck long enough, it can be like a living death. Albeit, through True Effort, we can embrace and Witness the living loving story of our lives, vs. getting permanently stuck as such.
I agree that it can be easy to forget about one’s own needs and responsibility in realizing our own growth, so it is SO important to be ongoingly mindful to deeply appreciate and put our lessons into practice, i.e., “a good teacher learns more than the student,” as the old analogy goes. When we embrace substantive mindfulness and truly genuine appreciation/gratitude, it is more difficult to get lost behind a wall of lies. If there is a Heaven, a ‘key to the universe,’ they are rooted in True Honesty, promoting of True Happiness and True Freedom…but most importantly, needing less and less to hide behind. This being in the spirit of Acting Without Acting, i.e., endeavoring to do the right thing for the right sake…without the need for selfish recognition or hidden agendas. In this so benevolent spirit, it becomes more easily consistent with a resplendent spirit of dignity, decency, goodness, and grace – and a deeper and deeper realization that we are so much more in the same boat than we often think and act. In this deeply loving spirit, we can catch more and more sparkling spine-tingling moments – glimpses of Heaven. Humbly and respectfully, it is learning to better and better play the part of the the unblemished Witness to our internal and external environments, more and more selfless – preparing us for a so-to-speak existence where there is NO “internal and external,” no time, no space, no distance.
The wars and famines of our spirits can become more and more benign, and evolve into something beyond beautiful, beyond sparkling and spine-tingling/shivering. It is a True Love, inclusive, but so much more than, familial, friendship, and romantic love. In this, we may be able to enjoy what may be at the pinnacle of our existence here on Earth – so lovingly embracing the True Responsibility of Supporting Others in their HEALTHFUL goals…oh boy (AND in a fashion in which we in no way get overtly co-dependent or lost in being)! — Dr. Glen Hepker
