What may be another genuine meaning of ‘disease?’

Humbly and respectfully, in the ages-old traditions that I teach, coach (at my wellness center, at workshops, and in my book), and endeavor to follow, NOT taking responsibility for one’s own health/well-being is the real disease in most cases, i.e.: TRUE disease is in NOT realizing a truly healthful dietary WAY OF LIFE; TRUE disease is in not embracing an adequate/truly healthful aerobic exercise/mobility WAY OF LIFE; TRUE disease is in not enjoying a truly healthful stress/anxiety-controlling WAY OF LIFE (which is inclusive of refined meditation and all-of-the-time diaphragmatic breathing).

Most of the time, what we conventionally perceive to be chronic disease is the RESULT/symptom of the REAL disease. This is not to say that health problems/lightning bolts cannot still strike…albeit, MUCH less so. This is a secondary thesis of the Bright Beautiful School of Thought/Ming Chia, whose (abbreviated) primary thesis is True Health through True Responsibility. In full, this thesis sets forth that the world would be a much better and different place as more and more people learn to take True Responsibility for their own health and well-being. — Dr. Glen Hepker

In contrast with the common interpretation, what might be a deeper meaning of the term ‘self-defense?’

For many decades, I have taught, coached, and practiced the arts(s) of tai chi chuan, chi kung, kung fu, and associated health wellness arts (inclusive of a vast health and wellness philosophy/theoretical foundation (as set forth in my book), acupuncture/pressure, herbal arts, nutritional arts, refined meditation, diaphragmatic breathing, guided imagery, tui na, stretching, diagnostics). In this specific tradition (of which there are plethora), we have an old saying, i.e.: “True self-defense is self-defense against our own weaknesses and bad habits.”

Humbly and respectfully, the point herein accordingly, is that it isn’t the speeding automobile, the mugger (or various types of ‘bad guys’), disease, or other vile/dangerous circumstances that we should most deeply be concerned about, and/or fear. Accordingly, what we should be most concerned about is our reaction to these things, inclusive of what might be associated with in our way of life. What we might best take into account, is that we have the wherewithal to realize skills (inclusive of quintessential levels of mindfulness) which can keep us MUCH safer and secure in difficult circumstances.

If we are confronted by a speeding car or mugger, wouldn’t it be of TRULY substantive benefit to be able to ‘keep one’s head,’ and not be (MOST truly) defeated by adrenal stress/panic. It is pretty clear that most muggers are aware that most people will panic (on varying levels, i.e., one-size-does-not-fit-all) – they know instinctively or strategically that most people do not commonly deal with such circumstances in their lifetimes. Muggers are genuinely not much different than a common bully. They would NOT (in most cases) ‘mug’ someone unless they were ‘pretty darn sure’ that they would come out on top. Not in an unhealthful spirit of meaning to be harsh, albeit most muggers/bullies are intrinsic cowards…entrenched to varying degrees into/of criminal sociopathic mindsets and miens which have been the foundation so much bad behavior – inclusive of wars and famines throughout human history. Once again, it is NOT in most cases a mugger or bully which defeats or gets the best of us, it is we ourselves who often fail to rise to the occasion. That said, PLEASE know, I believe that it is the ‘bad guy’ who is the REAL bad guy, NO MATTER how we respond to them.

My point is that we are rarely helpless…we DO have healthful choices. The outlook of true responsibility herein is inclusive of developing and deeply embracing a WAY OF LIFE which is genuinely healthful, i.e., with regard to stress/anxiety, exercise/mobility, and diet.

This also applies to disease…disease is not unlike a bully, or some such. Often (NOT always…lightning bolts DO strike…but even then, we have choices as to how to respond) our lack of exercise, our poor dietary way of life, and habitual means by which we deal with stress (and even the plethora means by which we promote it) are to significant degrees the root of the disease. It has been empirically substantiated that our whole outlook on life can (largely) either save us or defeat/destroy us: At any given time, any type perpetrator is simply a new form of stimulus which may or may not accelerate the time table.

Congruent with the overall outlook herein, we have an another saying in these ages-old traditions, i.e., “Humankind will not evolve/raise itself to higher common levels of objective insight and its practical applications, until at least a slight majority of us learn to take true responsibility for our own health and well-being,” in short, “true health through true responsibility.” — Dr. Glen Hepker

What do you think you should ask God to do for you?

Discussions/Questions (from readers of my book or in general): Dr. Hepker, how does one get filled with Godness and goodness? What do we need to do and also ask for? Do you believe there is any such key?

Response: Humbly and respectfully, I believe that we have been given all the tools/miracles we need…in order to make our world – THE world a better place.

God has allowed us all of the ‘beyond-measure-blessings’ that we need and should ever want to have. Speaking ONLY for myself (and in a totally non-judgmental spirit), I believe it is wrong of me to ask for more, in ANY way whatsoever (and how dare I if I do). I believe it is all about a deep, abiding, loving, selfless, altruistic True Appreciation of the miracle of the moment…more and more each moment. If there is a Heaven, a ‘key to the universe,’ a ‘sixth sense,’ they are rooted in True Honesty, promoting of True Happiness and True Freedom – but most importantly, needing less and less to hide behind. I believe that we have been given all of the necessary gifts in order to realize deeply benevolent and selfless sparkling spine-tingling ‘glimpses of Heaven,’ glimpses of a so-to-speak existence, where there is no time, no space, no distance…no yesterday, no today, no tomorrow, but once again most importantly, NOTHING to hide behind/all is known therein/thereof…all made up of True Love. It is a love beyond, yet inclusive of, familial, friendship, and romantic love.

“There is a place where, wherever we are there…whatever we are doing…there should be NOWHERE we’d rather be. It can be where we are right now, and each and every moment, if we exercise the True Effort to make it so.” There are countless miracles inside of us, and outside of us, all of the time. Maybe a key to universe is learning to more and more skillfully recognize them.

There may be skills on this Earth that are !WAY! beyond what we see as skills, in any common sense of the term. What if there are skills which are so genuinely, so beautifully BEYOND just being able to easily name them; little-perceived HIGHLY refined skills that literally take decades, if not a lifetime to even BEGIN to get good at? Our popular culture clearly does not see it this way…albeit each one of us does have the ability and wherewithal to realize this level of True Mastery and grace. It will sound backward – albeit it ISN’T, i.e., the most important aspect of realizing such levels of mastery, may be found in the splendidly wonderful blessing that there is ALWAYS room for improvement on this Earth. There is always room for us to be more and more masterful in connecting-the-healthful-dots…deeply embracing healthful change – versus (not in the spirit of sounding harsh) the living death of getting ongoingly stuck on stagnant plateaus.

What greater level of True Appreciation can there be…than in taking True Responsibility for our own health and wellbeing? Doing so may be the difference between just being a pawn in the story of our lives – versus learning to better and better learn to Witness the LIVING LOVING story of our lives. In a deeply loving spirit of utmost empathy and selflessness, the Bright Beautiful School of Thought sets forth that this is only possible WHEN embracing the splendid notion of Acting Without Acting – doing the right thing for the right sake, without the need for selfish recognition of hidden agendas. It is looking beyond and being without the weight of the pernicious and inimical ‘walls of lies.’ – Dr. Glen Hepker

In our interactions with others, what is the benefit of empathy vs. sympathy. Aren’t we much more in the same common boat than we often think and act?

Discussions/Questions (from readers of my book or in general): Dr. Hepker, I am seeking to understand the gray area between sympathy and empathy. Could you give me your perspective?

Response: Thanks so much for your question. QUITE humbly and respectfully, there is quite a ‘gray area’ within this dynamic. That said, when simply speaking (within the time I have here), empathy most often promotes strength in the persons giving empathy and those receiving it. Sympathy most often does not promote strength, and/or the splendid (and potentially spine-tingling loving) spark which is consistent with selflessly-shared and benevolent/altruistic empathy. As a trained psychologist, I can say that this exact issue has been redundantly researched. Researchers obviously don’t always get it right, but in this case I believe they have gotten it much more right than wrong. What I have shared herein is also quite congruent with the ages-old health/wellness philosophy set forth in my book. – Dr. Glen Hepker
