Glen, how would you describe the importance of the blessings that we have in our lives, and why do we often seem to just ignore or be completely unaware of them? (An inquiry from a reader of my book and blogs.)
Response: Humbly and respectfully, in learning to better and better (mindfully/meditatively) play the part of the less and less blemished Witness to one’s internal and external environments, one better and better realizes that there are magical (not parlor tricks) things beyond measure, going on within us and around us (mirroring back and forth – yin to yang) all of the time. We have the power to decide whether we will be pawns to the story of our lives, or pull ourselves up and to learn to better and better embrace the living loving story of our lives. We can choose to just survive by the ‘skin of our teeth,’ or we can learn to deeply and appreciatively thrive, while embracing what is among the greatest of gifts…that there is always room for improvement, greater and greater objective insight. Most pointedly, it is of great significance to become more and more able to face change – even learn to lovingly embrace it (especially healthful change).
Without expectations and preset patterns of thinking, we can learn to lovingly, selflessly, altruistically Witness the truth…that within this view there may be a plethora of wonderful gifts/surprises. It is in the splendidly healthful spirit of true appreciation/gratitude for the miracle of the moment…more and more each moment. If there is a Heaven, if there is a ‘key to the universe,’ if there is a ‘sixth sense,’ they are rooted in true honesty, promoting of true happiness and true freedom – but most importantly, needing less and less to hide behind. It is a sparkling spine-tingling ‘glimpse of Heaven’…without desire, craving, sadness, frustration, anger. It is taking True Responsibility for our own health and well-being, i.e., true health through true responsibility.
To say the least, this is ‘tough stuff’: Congruent with the ages-old traditions of the arts that I teach, coach, endeavor to follow, what wonderful and beautiful blessings will we enjoy, when embracing the notion of Acting Without Acting, i.e., doing the right thing for the right sake…without the need for selfish recognition or hidden agendas – in the impeccable spirit of dignity, decency, goodness, and grace? No doubt, in necessitates embracing our comfort and discomfort equally. Oh boy! (Once again, humbly and respectfully, how dare we not know countless blessings each day…each moment.) – Dr. Glen Hepker
