Question from a reader of my book: Glen, in your book you speak of a wonderful handed-down type of meditation that you teach at your wellness center. I would like to learn how to do it. Is there any way that I could go about this from a distance (obviously we are hundreds of miles apart)?
Response: A slightly abbreviated version of the meditation that I teach is on YouTube, i.e., in three parts – True Meditation #1, #2, and#3. This is the link: http://www.youtube.com/user/DrGlenHepker
I hope it assists you in realizing your healthful goal…but I realize it is difficult to do such things from a video. I teach at least two regular meditation groups each week at my school/wellness center…and even then, I recommend to participants that they first and foremost work toward MEMORIZING the refined ages-old steps of this splendid handed-down type of meditation (the Bright Beautiful School of Thought/Ming Chia). It can take some time, albeit there is nothing that can provoke greater blessings than when one takes benevolent and altruistic ownership of its steps/tenets. The three most important tenets are: learning all-of-the-time diaphragmatic breathing (again, nothing more healthful); learning to focus mindfully on JUST exactly what one is doing, i.e., on just one thing, vs. many things (pernicious heavy cyclical thinking) – eventually learning to empty one’s mind of the weight of thought (it is next to impossible to be upset or worried or sad, if one is not thinking such thoughts); learning to fan the furnace just behind one’s navel (the fanning of the ‘real tan tien’ by way of the breathing), in order to realize the true skill of prompting loving spine-tingling sparkling feelings AT WILL (the type of feelings people spontaneously enjoy in sentimental loving moments, i.e., like when listening to a song or watching a special movie).
True Meditation is congruent with a truly healthful and loving selflessness, i.e., a True Appreciation of the miracle of the moment…more and more each moment. There are wonderful magical things (not parlor tricks) going on inside of us and all around us all of the time (many of us are not trained to witness or caring of such things): It is learning to play the part of the less and less blemished Witness to one’s internal and external environments. It can be the difference between playing the part of the loving witness to the living loving story of one’s life, vs. just (not in the spirit of sounding harsh) being a pawn to the story of one’s life. In these arts, it is a truly substantive aspect of what is coined as True Health. There is a True Love, inclusive of, but much more than, familial, friendship, and romantic love. If there is a Heaven, a ‘key to the universe,’ a ‘sixth sense,’ they are rooted in True Honesty, promoting of True Happiness and True Freedom…but most importantly, less and less to hide behind. The following verse speaks splendidly to this:
The Lotus Flower Blossoms (as set forth in Chapter XV of my new book):
There is a place where, wherever you are there, whatever you are doing…no matter what, in any given moment, there should be nowhere you would rather be. It is where you are right now – and you have the ability to so deeply and artfully appreciate your life and its living…to connect one healthful insight to the next, and make them all one…learning to witness this already-existing truth.
In the wilderness of our existence…a place of budding flowers about, about to unwrap in a showing of perfect appreciation for all to thrive upon, we are the flowers which can blossom again and again in each season of our deeper and deeper insights…all connected…each better and more healthful than before.
It is not unlike Heaven…and it can become Heaven, with enough insight and appreciation. It takes quite a few sparks, glimpses – spine-tingling moments…as a way-of-life which becomes more and more purposeful…more and more without time or space or distance. More and more there is less and less to hide behind. — Dr. Glen Hepker
